Footnotes
Provenance:
Corinthian Studios, Saratoga, California, November 12, 1970
Note:
Two original keys accompany this commode, one is identical to the key illustrated in Christopher Payne, page 356, the bow cast with crown and interlaced L, the larger key of shield form bow cast with scrolling acanthus is shown in various sizes.
The design of the present commode relates closely to that of a pair, adapted by Guillaume Benneman from a model by Joseph Stöckel, supplied to Marie-Antoinette for the Salon des Jeux at Fontainebleau in 1786. Linke's version titled Commode Louis XVI, réduction de commode Marie-Antoinette, is slightly reduced in scale and therefore not an exact replica, but more en hommage
According to Christopher Payne. Linke's commode number 203 was first made in 1894, with subsequent examples, the last in 1929. Linke make the first versions with Wedgwood plaques, the later examples with central gilt bronze medallions.
