Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener, born in 1849 in Germany, established his workshop in Paris in 1880. Known for exceptional bronze mounts, marquetry and exquisite craftsmanship he was one of the most successful of the ebenistes a that time. Francois Linke is believed to have worked for him early in his career. Leon Message, the renowned sculptor, provided bronzes to both Zwiener and Linke. Zwiener counted Emperor Wilhelm II as one of his most devoted clients.
An important bedroom suite including an identical table de nuit with the same levanto vert marble was sold Sotheby's, New York, October 26, 2006, lot 138. The suite was noted as being similar to one made by Zwiener and delivered to Kaiser Wilhelm II, in 1898. A second identical table de nuit was sold Sotheby's New York, April 15, 2011 for $128,500.
