An American white marble figure: The Dancing Nymph
Olin Levi Warner (American, 1844–1896)
late 19th century

The lithe nude dancing with one leg lifted, standing beside a stump with Pan's flute and Bacchus's thyrsus at her feet, incised O. L. Warner 1881., together with a Neoclassical style cement columnar pedestal.

Footnotes

The original model of The Dancing Nymph was shown at the annual exhibition of the Society of American Artists. It was widely praised, including receiving mention in The New York Times on January 28, 1881 stating "Mr. Warner has imparted to his statuette great purity and nobility of expression". The Art Amateur also praised the artist and this work: "Let us go no more to Europe for our parlor statuettes, since this young maestro has proved his quality."
