The Breche de Violette marble top above a gilt chandelle and bead banded recessed frieze and a center drawer mounted with entrelac and flowerheads above two long drawers inlaid sans traverse with a still life depicting a Classical ewer and basket brimming with fruits and flowers, flanked by inlaid lattice work panels and stiles mounted with garlands of acanthus, roses and bellflowers ending in boldly scrolled acanthus and palmette cast sabots, signed F. Linke on gilt bronze half round molding below the frieze.

Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), cabinetmaker to the Royal family, produced several versions of this commode. The most famous is the one made for 1776 for the Comtesse de Provence and delivered to Versailles, now in the Waddeson Manor Collection. Another variation is in the Frick Collection, New York.
A nearly identical commode made by Francois Linke for Maison Krieger was sold Sotheby's, 19th Century Furniture, New York, April 20, 2009 Lot 266.
