Provenance:
Butterfield & Butterfield, Sale 2740, July 19, 1971, lot 547

Charles Cressent (1685-1768) was both an accomplished sculptor and ebeniste as well as pupil of Andres Charles Boulle. Although his furniture is not stamped, catalogues of sales of his clients as well as three catalogues of sales he conducted exist. In the 1758 sale, a commode sold with singerie themes of children holding ropes balancing monkeys and dogs. That commode is now in the Louvre Collection and is illustrated in Alexandre Pradere, French Furniture Makers, the Art of the Ebeniste from Louis XIV to the Revolution, 1989, illustration 99, page 136. That commode is the inspiration for a number of 19th century ebenistes including Zwiener, Krieger and Linke.

A very similar bureau plat, signed F. Linke, sold Christie's, New York, 500 Years of Decorative Arts, April 15, 2011, lot 203; a second bureau plat attributed to Linke but unsigned, sold Sotheby's New York, April 20, 2007, lot 133; a singerie commode attributed to Linke sold Christie's, April 15, 2011, lot 158, that commode had a lock plate signed just as does the offered bureau plat MON THEAU THIEFFINES SUCCR SERRURIER PARIS..
