Footnotes

Provenance:
John Paterson Jnr. Thence by descent.

By family repute, this suite was given by Cecil John Rhodes to John Paterson Jnr., during Rhodes' time in Kimberley. John Paterson Jnr., for a period Rhodes' private secretary, was the son of John Paterson, founder of the Standard Bank of British South Africa which counted Rhodes amongst its clients.
The 1870s and 1880s saw many small scale miners prospecting the diamond fields of Kimberley. Rhodes' policy of buying up all of these claims ensured that by 1888, when Rhodes and his partner Rudd launched De Beers Consolidated Mines, they had a monopoly on diamond production.
