Footnotes

Provenance
Sir John Hackett (signature on title); engraved book plate of Pitfirrane

First edition of the first atlas of the Russian Empire with thirteen maps devoted to European Russia and six to Siberia. Commenced by Peter the Great, Delisle arrived in Russia in 1726 to assist in the survey of Russia working with Ivan Kirilov. The two disagreed, and Kirilov published the first part of his work in 1734. Delisle worked on and his atlas, using some of Kirilov's plates, was finally published in 1745, which was highly praised inside Russia and abroad. Phillips Atlases 4060.
