An Ottoman metal thread-embroidered women's Caftan
Turkey, 19th Century

on a velvet ground, with silver and gilt-metal thread
102 cm. long

Footnotes

In the early 19th Century, caftans were worn over a robe. They were open in form, sometimes had sleeves and usually did not have a collar. For another example of this type in the Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul (inv. no. 13/2165) see Istanbul, The City and the Sultan, exhibition catalogue, Amsterdam, 2006, cat. no 178.

The embroidery on this particular caftan shows European influence. Its very small size indicates it may have been worn by a young girl.
