Footnotes

Provenance:
Vitall Benguiat, Florence; French & co, New York; Vojtech Blau, New York; Private collection, Antwerp; London art market, from where it was acquired by the present owner circa 1987.

The detailed and naturalistic depiction and, indeed, many elements of the pattern are adapted from Italian designs.

The silver thread has worn in areas of this velvet, exposing the yellow silk wefts. This yellow was probably dyed from saffron, crocus sativus.
