A calligraphic composition signed by Salih Namiq Shamakhi
Southern Caucasus, Azerbaijan, dated AH 1301/AD 1883-1884

Arabic manuscript on paper, the text consisting of verses from the Qur'an and other phrases written in bold thuluth script in black ink variously within cartouches and a roundel, against a background of stylised floral motifs in dull gold on a maroon ground, narrow zigzag border, framed
450 x 310 mm.

Footnotes

The text consists of Qur'an, sura VII, verse 29, and XXVII, verse 19. The roundel contains the phrase Huwa al-hayy, He is the Living One.

The epithet Shamakhi refers to Shamakha, capital of the Azeri Khanate of Shirvan-Shamakha. It was one of the major centres of Islamic culture in the southern Caucasus until a devastating earthquake in 1859.
