An illuminated Qur'an
Persia, 18th Century

Arabic manuscript on paper, 359 leaves, 12 lines to the page written in neat and clear naskhi script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in red and black, gold discs decorated with blue and red dots between verses, double interlinear rules in gold with Persian translation written in small nasta'liq script in red, inner margins ruled in green, red, blue and gold, catchwords, occasional illuminated devices, extensive commentaries neatly written diagonally and horizontally in small nasta'liq/shikasteh script in wide outer margins, sura headings written in thuluth script in red within gilt cartouches which are in turn incorporated into illuminated rectangular panels, one illuminated frontispiece in colours and gold, discoloration, corners rather thumbed, lacquer binding with covers decorated wtih central medallions and cornerpieces of intertwining stylised flowerheads and serrated leaves in gold on a black ground within a red field, spine damaged and repaired
