An illuminated Qur'an
Mughal India, 17th Century

Arabic manuscript on paper, 480 leaves, 11 lines to the page written in elegant naskhi script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in red and black, illuminated markers between verses, remargined, inner margins ruled in light blue and gold, the words khams and ushr, indicating the end of every fifth and tenth verse, written diagonally in gold in outer margins, extensive commentaries written diagonally in small shikasteh script, sura headings written in thuluth in gold within undecorated rectangular panels, one illuminated frontispiece in colours and gold, worming, some smudging, waterstaining, some crude repairs, red morocco with stamped central medallions, cornerpieces and panels of gilt paper onlay, edges worn, some worming, spine repaired, with flap, repaired
