Footnotes

Découpage compositions were popular in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th Century. The present lot refers to the idea of Islam as the safinat al-najat, lifeboat, as mentioned in the hadith. On découpage, see Gulbun Mesara, Turk Sanatinda Ince Kagit Oymaciligi, Istanbul 1991. On the Seven Sleepers in Islamic tradition, see H. Kandler, Die Bedeutung der Siebenschläfer (Ashab al-kahf) im Islam, Bochum 1994.

The name of the artist appears in a cartouche and mentions his affiliation with the Imperial Band. A découpage composition by the same artist, dated AH 1317, was sold at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 6th October 2009, lot 228.
