Footnotes

A similarly decorated bowl is in the Musee du Louvre, Paris (inv. 7242) illustrated in Arabesques et jardins de paradis, exhibition catalogue, Musee du Louvre, Paris, 1989, no. 5; and there are several examples in the Al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, illustrated in O.Watson,Ceramics from Islamic Lands, Thames and Hudson, London, cat. Ia.5 - cat.Ia.8. Watson comments that this group of wares, where animal drawings stand out on a strongly hatched ground, recall Khorasan bronzes of the same period in the treatment of the surface and designs.
