Footnotes

The use of these plaques may have been either as belt elements or horse fittings. A silver gilt facing for a cantle and saddle dated to the 12-13th century in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg displays a similar design of four three-petalled flowers arranged around a series of circles (Inv. no. Collection 1931, no. 64; illustrated in D. Alexander (ed.), Furusiyya, Vol. I, Riyadh, 1996, Ill. IV, p. 51).
