Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari and Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi were married on the 12th of February 1951 in the Marble Palace, Tehran. Two thousand guests were present, including Aga Khan III, and the ceremony was decorated by one and a half tonnes of orchids, tulips and carnations sent by air from the Netherlands. The bride was sumptuously dressed in a silver lamé gown by Christian Dior studded with pearls and trimmed with marabou stork feathers. She also wore a full-length white-mink cape.
