A set of six gilded facet-stem wine glasses, circa 1775-80

Attributed to the Giles workshop, with ogee bowls gilded with undulating branches of fruiting vines, on diamond-faceted stems and plain feet, 12.5cm-12.8cm high (6)

Footnotes

Provenance: Peter Meyer Collection
With Maureen Thompson, 21 July 1978

Exhibited: Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1983-94
The Glass Circle Diamond Jubilee Exhibition, 1997, no.128

These glasses were clearly popular as a number have remained together as sets. Four were sold in these rooms 19 May 2010 and a further five on 15 December 2010. A set of six was sold at Christie's 7 June 1988, lot 241. These are examples of so-called 'hidden Jacobites' as when viewed from above the faceted stems make the shape of a rose in the base of the bowls
