The Eagle is the best known of the Bristol 'Privateers' due to its appearance on sets of wine glasses with opaque twist stems. The Eagle was owned by Messrs. Camplin and Smith of Bristol and Manslip and Wilkinson of London. She was purpose built as a Privateer and was described as being 250 tons and carried 24 guns. The Eagle was declared on 13 November 1756 by Captain John Knill, whose name appears on several Privateer glasses alongside an image of his vessel. In April 1757 the London Chronicle referred to the Eagle under the command of Captain Dibden. See Damer Powell, Bristol Privateers and Ships of War (1930), p.205.
