A pair of engraved decanters and stoppers by August Böhm Jr, circa 1870

Of slender or cylindrical bottle shape overlaid in green, the necks, bases and reverses cut with vertical flutes, the shoulders with borders of fruiting vines, the reserved panels engraved by August Böhm Jr, both signed A Böhm, one with an Arab horseman brandishing a scimitar, the other with a young man in a theatrical pose delivering a letter to a seated lady resting by a pedestal, 37.5cm high (minor chips) (4)

Footnotes

August Böhm Jr (1848-1910) was taught by his father of the same name. August Böhm Sr (1812-1890) was one of the finest glass engravers of the 19th century. The younger August Böhm settled in England and worked in Stourbridge. It is likely that a series of these distinctive bottle-shaped decanters engraved in the Bohemian style and signed A Böhm are British productions by the younger engraver. Another bottle shaped decanter signed A Böhm, with an identical subject to the present lot, was exhibited by Michael Kovacek, Glass of 5 Centuries, p. 220 (as the work of Bohm Sr). This is illustrated and discussed by Paul von Lichtenberg, Glasgravuren des Biedermeier (2004), p.206, fig. 127 where it is re-attributed to the younger August Böhm. Böhm Jr was clearly a very talented engraver like his father. A blue decanter of the same shape engraved with Flora and Zephyrus is in the Glasmuseum Rheinbach, cat. no.157. August Böhm Jr's own son, Henry also worked as a glass engraver and cameo artist and changed his name to H J Boam
