A fine French opaline dessert service, mid 19th century

Retailed by Maison Toy of Paris, the 'harlequin' set richly enamelled in the manner of Sèvres porcelain with different patterns featuring flower-painted centres and richly gilded borders in turquoise or deep blue, comprising two footed comports or tazzas and ten plates, the plates 23.2cm diam, stencilled marks MAISON TOY 19. Rue de la Chaussee D'Antin (12)

Footnotes

The firm of W E Toy sold fine porcelain and glass at 19 Rue Chaussée d'Antin from circa 1845 into the 1860s. It is very unusual to find decoration of this quality on opaque glass rather than porcelain and it is likely these pieces were created as specimen plates.
