A fine Viennese Zodiac beaker (Ranftbecher) by Anton Kothgasser, circa 1820

Of slightly flared shape rising from a milled base, decorated in 'Pompeian' style with a transparentmalerei border of twelve omphalos, each painted with a sign of the zodiac identified with the initial letter and number of days in the month, the zodiac signs against orange and amber grounds, the black background reserved with stylized cherry motifs, the lower half of the beaker entirely gilded beneath a band of Greek Key pattern, 11.8cm high

Footnotes

An identical Ranftbecher is illustrated by Paul von Lichtenberg, Mohn & Kothgasser (2009), no.319. The Pompeian style of decoration on Kothgasser beakers was probably inspired by similar decoration on Vienna porcelain
