A George I commemorative moulded-stem wine glass, circa 1715

The conical bowl with a solid base containing a tear, the hollow four-sided stem moulded in relief with a crowned portrait of the King flanked by initials GR, the other three sides inscribed 'God Save ye King', on a conical folded foot, 16.6cm high

A very similar glass was in the Ron and Mary Thomas Collection, sold in these rooms 4 June 2008, lot 17. Another, inscribed 'God Save King George' was in the Albert Hartshorne Collection, sold in these rooms 15 December 2010, lot 7. This interesting group of pro-Hanoverian glasses with moulded stems featuring inscriptions to King George can be shown to date to the early years of George I's reign, see Glass Circle News no.109, 2006, pp.12-13.
