The Crawley Glass: an inscribed Jacobite wine glass, circa 1760-65

The rounded funnel bowl engraved with a formal six-petalled rose on a stem with an open bud and a closed bud, the reverse with a thistle, inscribed around the rim 'SUCCESS TO THE SOCIETY', on a double series opaque twist stem with a pair of multi-ply tapes encircling a spiral gauze, 15.9cm high

Footnotes

Illustrated in the Glass Circle Journal 8 (1995), Jacobite Clubs, p.25. This class can be attributed to 'Engraver H'. Only a small number of matching glasses are recorded including one sold by Sotheby's 28 April 1980, lot 158. Geoffrey Seddon, The Jacobites and their Drinking Glasses, p. 124 illustrates a similar example and suggests that the society in question is the Society of Jesus.
