An inscribed Jacobite wine glass, circa 1750

The rounded funnel bowl engraved with a six-petalled rose on a stem with a closed bud and a half-open bud, inscribed at the rim 'Turno Tempus erit', the reverse with a star and 'Fiat', on a multiple spiral airtwist stem with shoulder and centre knop, the foot engraved with a thistle and 'Redeat', 15.2cm high (a minute nick to the foot)

Footnotes

Provenance: A French private collection

The Jacobite mottoes Redeat (May he return) and Turno Tempus erit (For Turnus there shall be a time) are occasionally found together on these attractive glasses. Geoffrey Seddon, The Jacobites and their Drinking Glasses (1995), p.110 suggests that Turnus probably refers to the Duke of Cumberland, with the implication that the Hanoverian victory might be short-lived.
