Provenance:
Sold at Sotheby's, 17 September 1979, lot 193, the property of the late Lady Hudson
Previously attributed by Sotheby's to the hand of Johann Christoph Kiessling, Dresden, circa 1730, the present lot is typical of the rare work of Anton Wilhelm Mäuerl. Mäuerl was born in Wunsdiedel in 1672 and worked in London between 1699 ands 1710. After that date he is known to have been working in Nürnberg until 1730. He is considered to have been one of the leading exponents of Laub-und Bandelwerk and is believed to be the first German glass engraver to introduce Chinoiserie styles to glass. He died in Hersbruck in 1737.
