The cover decorated in red, gold, silver takamakie with a partially-open scroll lying over a hossu beside a tall Chinese stand on top of which rests a shishi okimono reserved on a ground of regularly-shaped inlays of aogai embedded in black lacquer, the inside of the cover lacquered with a biwa, plectrum and rectangular lacquer box on a plain roiro ground, the box containing an en-suite detachable tray which holds the ink stone and a gilt and copper suiteki (water dropper) in the form of two overlapping chrysanthemum heads, unsigned; with wood storage box. 3.5cm x 20.3cm x 18cm (1 3/8in x 8in x 7in).
