Footnotes
Dating back to the time of Fujiwara no Kamatari (614-669), the Konoe are the most senior of the Gosekke (Five Regent Families of Japan), a group which also includes the Kujo, Nijo, Ichijo and Takatsukasa. Konoe family members have served as Imperial regents and chancellors, and Prince Konoe Fumimaro (1891-1945) was three times Prime Minister. The current head of the family, Konoe Tadateru, is the fiftieth person to hold that position.
The 'Inoue family' referred to in one of the labels on the storage box may be the distinguished Kyoto family which preserves the Inoue style of Nihon buyo (traditional Japanese perfoming arts). The first iemoto (grand master), Inoue Yachiyo I (1767-1855), worked for the Konoe family.
The Yomei Bunko Foundation in Kyoto is the treasury of the Konoe clan. Numbering hundreds of thousands of items, the Yomei Bunko collection includes early historical documents, books, manuscripts and works of art.
