Edo Period, 17th century
A pair of 'Four Seasons' six-fold screens, in early Kano style, painted in ink and colour on a gold paper ground, both with a scene of various birds and flowers from the four seasons; the right screen depicting spring and summer, showing from the right to left, a flowering camellia tree, snow-laden pine tree and a willow tree in spring, pink shakuyaku (Paeonia lactiflora) in summer with several birds including an exotic pair with long tails perched on a rock, oshidori (mandarin ducks) on a stream and a shijukara (Japanese tit) in flight; the left screen depicting the seasons of autumn and winter, showing from right to left, a flowering red peony, daffodils, flowering plum and pine trees, among which several birds including a hibari (skylark) and a sekirei (wagtail) are perched or in flight and a family of ducks on a stream, both unsigned. 174.5cm x 378.2cm (68¾in x 148 7/8in). Footnotes

Accompanied by a number of documents including a letter from the 6th Abbot at Shogen Temple in Iwami Ginzan, Shimane Prefecture, dated 1747 and a letter from Yashiro Yukio (1890-1975), the celebrated art historian, dated 1932, requesting to have the screens on loan for the occasion of the 90th Exhibition of the Nihon Bijutsukyokai.
