A pair of six-fold screens, in ink and colour on a gold-leaf ground, the right screen depicting an adult shishi and two offspring playfully frolicking beneath pines, the left screen depicting an adult with three cubs beside peonies growing from behind rocks, both screens signed Hogen Shunmei sei with two seals. 173.5cm x 343cm (68¼in x 135in). Footnotes
Born and working in Niigata, Igarashi Shunmei was a Kano School painter. He was a pupil of Kano Ryoshin and then studied the Tosa and Chinese Song-style of painting in Kyoto. He used the go (art name) Go Shunmei for a short time whilst he was middle aged and was awarded the titles of Hokkyo and Hogen later in his life. He specialized in landscapes, figures and flower paintings.
