Footnotes
The sodegarami (sleeve entangler) was a pole weapon used by samurai and their retainers to catch felons during the Edo Period. The barbed heads and the lines of spikes prevented an opponent from grabbing it when it was thrust forward. It was evolved from the yagaramogara used by naval forces which in turn was derived from the Chinese lang xian, used in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) to defend against Japanese pirates.
The present example unusually incorporates within, as a variation, a small yari blade.
