By Koma Koryu, circa 1840
The sparse mura-nashiji ground decorated in gold hiramakie, kirikane, takamakie and e-nashiji with a man in Heian-period court dress gathering herbs by a waterfall, his attendant shown on the reverse, stands with a sword resting on his shoulder as he looks out watchfully into the distance, pine saplings growing on the rocky slopes suggest that the season is early Spring, the figures inlaid in gold and shakudo, the interior and risers of gyobu nashiji, signed in raised gold lacquer Koma Koryu saku.
10.2cm (4in) wide.
