Late 17th/early 18th century
Lacquered over the tan ground with a recumbent ox in originally gold hiramakie, now pleasingly worn to the black beneath, the reverse with two small peasants pulling on a halter to try and raise the beast, most of one figure is in similar hiramakie to the ox, while his hat and the whole of the other figure, as well as a mound on the reverse are inlaid in neat slivers of shell inlay, reminiscent of the work of Tsuchida Soetsu, unsigned. 10.9cm (4¼in) wide.
