The present work is included in the numbered archive of the artist's work compiled by Gianni Caffiero and Ivan Samarine.

The recipient of the painting, Georgy Ivanovich Engel'man, was a Russian naval captain who was awarded the Order of St. Anna, 4th Class, for courage and the Order of St. Stanislav, 3rd Class, 'with swords'. Engel'man and his wife lived in Sevastopol and his portrait is featured in the anthology People of Sebastopol about the people who came to its defence in 1854-1855.
