Maria Dol Escobar, recognized as Marisol (Escobar), was born in Paris 1922 of Venezuelan heritage. She studied at Jepson Art Institute in Los Angles, Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and then in New York at the Art Students League and the Hans Hofmann School. for Social Research. She discovered Pre-Columbian artifacts and American folk art, redirecting her love of painting to sculpturing. She became influenced in the 1960 Pop Art movement, gaining recognition and popularity.
From "A Bold and Incisive Way of Portraying Movers and Shakers" by Avis Berman, p. 14, he wrote that Marisol is a "sculptor of modern life." She "evokes the venality of social climbers, the integrity of great artists, the contradictions of the powerful and the quiet dignity of dispossessed."
She has received awards including the 1997 Premio Gabriela Mistral from the Organization of American States for her contribution to Inter-American culture. She was elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1978. Her jewelry has appeared in exhibitions and collections around the world, most recently in "From Picasso To Koons: The Artist As Jeweler" Bass Museum of Art, Miami: March 15-July 21, 2013. An identical ring to the ring that Bonhams is currently offering, is 'Self Portrait, 1967', which appears in Diane Venet's book: From Picasso To Koons: The Artist As Jeweler.
