designed as an old-cut diamond scroll motif, centering upon two cushion-cut sapphires, weighing 3.92 and 5.90 carats;
estimated total diamond weight: 1.30 carats; mounted in platinum-topped eighteen karat gold; length: 1 1/2in.

Nancy Johnston McNear, born in Switzerland, was the great granddaughter of Francis G. Newlands, the founder of Chevy Chase, Md and a Senator of Nevada. Senator Newlands was married to the daughter of fellow Nevadan Senator William "King of the Comstock Lode" Sharon, and inherited the Palace Hotel of San Francisco from Senator Sharon's estate. Nancy Johnston was married to Donald C. McNear, a 4th generation San Franciscan whose familial patriarch, George P. McNear, known as the "Grain King", donated land to Marin County now known as McNear's Beach State Park.
