The present work was commissioned by the original owners in 1940 for their home in New Milford, Connecticut, most well-known as the "Pumpkin Hill House." Although currently framed for wall mounting, the work was originally laid by contractors following gouache and cartoon designs by the artist (now destroyed). Davis also designed two other floors and a carpet for the family, yet this is the only floor to survive today.
