A rare Pattern 1796 heavy dragoon pistol with Nock's patent screwless lock
Round 9 inch, .79 caliber smoothbore barrel; marked with two ordnance marks and crown stamp slightly left of center on breech. Scarce Nock's patent screwless flintlock with flat beveled lockplate face marked HNock near tang and with crown over GR cypher in center along with small ordnance stamp. Brass triggerguard with crown stamped inside bow, small round brass escutcheon around single lock screw; no buttcap. Walnut stock with raised panels around lock and opposite of lock; stock was cut for ramrod, but is tapered where entry thimble would be located.
Condition: Very good. Barrel and lock with dark brown patina, some light pitting on barrel and medium pitting around touch hole. Barrel markings still visible, but showing wear. Mechanism does not stay in full cock position; very clear markings on lockplate. Brass with dark patina. Stock refinished and with series of small dents on end of grip, series of dents behind barrel tang and on grip spine, small area of loss beneath lock tang, small chip forward of lockplate; scattered marks from use.
