"Objects in Dann's world hunker and lurch with a comic animal energy, as if conducting secret lives behind our backs."
- Kenneth Baker, San Francisco Chronicle
The late Stan Dann was a respected San Francisco area artist whose work captures the light-hearted spirit of the 60's California art scene. His hand carved custom wood signs and doors started to appear in front of shops in and around the Bay Area during the early 1960's and helped define the hand-made, bohemian aesthetic of that period, His exceptional craftsmanship made his work in high demand with prominent architects and designers of the era. Dann's long career demonstrates a consistent command of the medium. His dynamic, puzzle-like wood reliefs from 1980 through 2012 cement his unique vision in California contemporary art. His imagery never loses its graceful incorporation of naturalistic form, often infused with a touch of whimsy. The bronze Sun and "Groovy Shoes" are finely crafted examples from the spectrum of Dann's artistic legacy.
