A pair of French flintlock screwbarrel pocket pistols by Jean Brossard
St. Etienne, third quarter 18th century
St. Etienne, third quarter 18th century
Each with 3 inch two-stage .40 caliber cannon barrel; breeches with punched gilt decoration; undersides signed Jean/Brossard with two maker's marks. Rounded lockplates. Steel triggerguards with long, vasiform finials. Spurred buttcaps. Walnut stocks relief-carved with panels framing the lock, triggerguard and counterplate, the wrists with floral sprays.
Condition: Very good. Gray metal showing scattered minor pitting. Barrels retain much of the gilt decoration. Stocks showing scattered minor marks, one fore-end with hairline crack.
