Footnotes

Note: Records from the Adjutant General's office shows that serial no. 77460 was issued to Company D, 7th Michigan Cavalry and the company records show it was issued to Private Joseph N. Hawkins. The regiment, and Private Hawkins, served intially in the Defence of Washington and were then formed, with the 5th and 6th regiments, into the Michigan Cavalry Brigade under the command of General Joseph T. Copeland. Private Hawkins served with the regiment at the Battle of Catlett's Station against General John Singleton Mosby on May 29, 1863; at the Battle of Hanover against General J.E.B. Stuart on June 30, 1863 and at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 3, 4 and 5, 1863 during which he participated in the famous charge lead by Custer. Private Hawkins entered the hospital on July 6th with Typhoid Fever and passed away on July 20th. Serial no. 77460 continued in service with the 7th Michigan but there is no information on who it might subsequently been issued to. In August of 1865 the Michigan Cavalry Brigade was sent west as part of General Patrick Connors' Powder River Expedition against the Sioux and Cheyenne tribes.
