Footnotes

The S.S. "United States" was built by Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock Co. in Newport News, Virginia. She was launched on June 23, 1951, and had principle dimensions of LOA: 990 feet, Beam: 101.7, and her gross tonnage was 53,329 tons. On her maiden voyage to Southampton in July 1952, she became the fastest commercial ship ever built, breaking all speed records. She was laid up in 1969 at Newport News, and later Hampton Roads. Several plans to restore her and return her to service have each come to naught, and she can now be seen dwarfing the lower environs of the city of Philadelphia.
