Footnotes

Azumah Nelson was born on September 19th, 1958, in Accra, Ghana. Making his professional debut at just nineteen, it was quickly evident that Azumah had the power and skill to become a star in the boxing world.

On July 21st, 1982, Nelson entered the ring before thousands at Madison Square Garden and audaciously challenged Salvador Sánchez Narváez for the WBC featherweight Championship. Only Nelson's fourteenth bout, the young, precocious Nelson proved to be more than a handful. He held on until the fifteenth and final round when Sánchez Narváez's legendary power, greater experience and iron will overcame Azumah's usurping efforts and the referee stopped the fight. On this day, the boxing world knew that Azumah Nelson was a force that would continue to be reckoned with!

Two years later, Nelson returned to challenge Wilfrido Gomez in San Juan Puerto Rico and in an eleventh round knockout, the Accra native won, becoming the WBC's featherweight champion in 1984. In the ring, Azumah Nelson is most remembered for his famous fight against Gabriel Ruedas during the historic card held at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on February 20th, 1993.
Nelson's last bout came on July 11th, 1988 in San Antonio Texas where he fought James Leija for the fourth time.

The Professor, as he is often referred to, successfully defended his WBC Featherweight champion title 10 times and cemented his place as one of the all time greats. A student who graduated with the highest honours to become a professor of the ring.
