LINCOLN ELECTION—WIDE-AWAKES.

Double-swivel kerosene torch of the type used by the pro-Lincoln marching club the Wide Awakes during the Presidential election of 1860, 55 inches tall on wooden shaft, excellent condition.

The Wide Awakes were one of the best-known and most influential grassroots political organizations of 19th century America. They wore oil-cloth caps and capes as they carried kerosene torches in nighttime parades, the torch being the most prominent symbol of "Wide Awake" vigilance against the atrocities of slavery. The organization of the Wide Awakes was a significant factor enabling the first wave of mass volunteering for the Union army.
