8vo. xvi, 125 pp. Original blind-stamped cloth, spine gilt-lettered. Minor spotting/browning, clipping of a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar pasted to portrait verso, skilfully rebound with original cloth and endpapers preserved. Custom clamshell box.
Provenance: F. Gertrude Page of Brockport (ownership inscription to f.f.e.); Liffy Adams (ownership inscription to r.f.e.).

GREAT ASSOCIATION COPY, SECOND AMERICAN EDITION. Florence Gertrude Page [c.1870-1917] was an African-American seamstress and a friend of Frederick Douglass and his family. Her father, William Page, was a former slave from Florida and the first African American to graduate from the University of Rochester in New York. Gertrude Page attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she befriended the Douglass family.
