CALIFORNIA—THE SECULARIZATION OF THE MISSIONS.

GARCIA, D. CARLOS. Primera Secretaria de Estado ... Se faculta al Gobierno para que tome todas las providencias que aseguren la Colonizacion, y hagan efectiva la secularizacion de las misiones de la Alta y Baja California.... Mexico [City]: November 26, 1833. Broadside (293 x 205 mm). With integral blank. Laid paper watermarked "Gior Magnani / Al Masso" with crest. Very light thumbing to right margin, small pinhole at upper left corner, otherwise a very fine copy.

A broadside announcing the recent passage by the Mexican Congress of a law authorizing the secularization of the missions of upper and lower California, signed in type by Garcia as Secretary of State and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as President. By this act the Mexican government in effect siezed the assets of the missions, using the proceeds to finance colonization of California.
