An Oration Delivered at the State-House, in Philadelphia, to a Very Numerous Audience, on Thursday the 1st of August, 1776. Philadelphia printed; London: reprinted for E. Johnson, 1776.
8vo (207 x 115 mm). [2], 42 pp. Recent quarter cloth. Lacking half-title, textblock sewn with first and last leaves tipped to endpapers, chipping to head of title with no loss to text, light soiling and some spotting throughout.
FIRST EDITION. Contrary to the claims of the title page, no Philadelphia edition was ever printed; indeed, no such oration was delivered by Samuel Adams. The present pamphlet is "a London forgery designed to show that the colonies were bent on independence" (Howes). The author was evidently unaware of the signing of the Declaration of Independence a month before the date assigned to the speech. Howes A72; Sabin 344.
