A large collection of books, manuscripts and ephemera hailing from the estate of best-selling author Harold Robbins, including the following: 1. The author's 1930s Corona Portable #3 typewriter with certificate of manufacture; together with a 1970s issue IBM Wheelwriter 3.
2. Typed manuscript, approx 700 pp, near final draft of The Betsy (plus another copy), together with Typed Manuscript of its sequel, The Stallion.
3. Typed manuscript with annotations, working copy of Joe Crown.
4. Typed manuscript with annotations, working copy of Spellbinder screenplay.
5. Typed manuscript, a corrected synopsis of The Man Who Had Everything But Everything Wasn't Enough.
6. Mimeographed manuscripts of the screenplay versions of The Lonely Lady; Dynasty; Backlash, Dreams Die First (5 copies), Empire (4 copies) and Lifestyle.
7. Approximately 55 legal files of contractual material relating to various projects, including The Middlemen, Memoirs of Another Day, Dreams Die First and The Betsy; documents include correspondence with publishers and film producers, plus other legal correspondence.
8. 14 copies of Harold Robbins novels, some of which are presentation copies from M. Korda.
Other highlights include 2 16mm print reels of Never Love a Stranger with 1973 invoice to canister; 8 files of photographs of head shots and contact sheets; 2 LP recordings of soundtracks for film adaptations of Robbins' work; an envelope of candid polaroids; VHS tapes, some with personal content; a group of personal framed and bound family photos, presumably Robbins' parents and grandparents etc.; personal correspondence; awards, and more.
Robbins' tremendous success as a popular novelist relied as much upon the readership's fascination with recent American history as it did on salaciousness. He was often inspired by Hollywood and the movie industry, as well as the aviation and automotive industries (The Carpetbaggers and The Betsy respectively). The contract files in particular give a unique glimpse into the way Robbins controlled and nurtured his empire.
