Original pen and ink illustration on cardstock, 247 x 286 mm, signed ("A. Rackham"), October 8, 1891, framed, 6 pinholes in margins, 1/2 inch closed tear in upper margin briefly affecting image, faint spotting near lower margin, light crease to lower right corner.
A wonderfully detailed and early illustration by Rackham done for the Pall Mall Budget in 1891 on the occasion of the birth of Queen Victoria's 34th grandchild. Based on the nursery rhyme "The Old Lady who Lived in a Shoe," the image depicts the Queen, who wears the Imperial Crown, sitting in the heel of a lady's shoe presumably with her grandchildren and with a nurse presenting her with a newborn baby. Children and likely members of the Royal Family dance and play around the shoe, all under the flowing Union Jack. This is certainly an interesting bridge between Rackham's periodical work and his much loved illustrated books. A letter from Frank Hollings, Booksellers offering the piece is included.
