FIRST EDITIONS, AFFECTIONATELY INSCRIBED TO DOE AVEDON. Dorcas Marie Nowell [1925-2011], was a bookish bank clerk when Avedon met her, changed her name to "Doe" and launched her career as a fashion model and actress.
