4to (220 x 168 mm). [26], 378, [10] pp. Title in red and black. Translated by John Morrison. Engraved additional title, 19 double-page plates, one folding map ("A New Card of the Caspian Sea Drawn by ... Struys in the Year 1668"). 19th century armorial calf. All engravings cut to within the plate mark and backed onto laid paper, repaired split to one plate, neat repair to inner blank margin of O4, some general light soiling and marginal staining, rebacked with old spine laid down.
Provenance: Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Baronet, of Pollok [1818-1878] (aka William Maxwell, his arms to binding and bookplate).
THE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the account of Struys' three voyages over a 26 year period. Struys was almost certainly illiterate, and the current interpretation of the evidence suggests that Olfert Dapper was the actual author. Nevertheless, the work contains a large enough kernel of truth to rightly be considered an important record of the places and events that Struys allegedly witnessed.
